Okay, after reading more on pedagogical content knowledge(PCK) (I don’t know about you but PCK conjures up an image of a fancy new chewing gum for me!) I can honestly say I finally get it.
After reading the article by Koehler the following statement highlights to me the main crux of PCK:
“knowing what teaching approaches fits the content and knowing how elements of the content can be arranged for better teaching”
Broken down into stages implementing it goes something like this:
Representation and formulation of concepts–> pedagogical techniques–>knowledge of what makes concepts easy or difficult to understand–>knowledge of students prior knowledge
A fellow student provides a nice clear example of PCK used in the classroom.
